Implant Rescue and Implant Maintenance
The first dental implant was placed in 1965 and since then millions of dental implants have been placed all around the world. With science and development, dental implants are now a mainstream procedure with high success rates giving patients many years of service.
Like natural teeth dental implants are prone to gum disease. The inflammation of the gums around an implant is termed peri-implant mucositis. This is often due to plaque and calculus build up around the implant crown. Luckily if detected early, it can be managed uneventfully and result in no permanent damage to the implant. At Dental Artistry we have the latest tools to maintain the health of the gums around the implants. This includes the famous EMS airflow, lasers and special cleaning instruments designed just for implants and their crowns to ensure there is no damage to the structure.
If peri-implant mucositis is left unchecked, it can develop into peri-implantitis which is similar to periodontitis in natural teeth. At this stage the bone around the implant is infected and begins to disappear. This results in gum recession around the dental implant which makes for an unsightly appearance and increases the difficulty to clean around the rough surface. In the long term, the implant will have no more bone support and become mobile, infected with pus and lost.
Dr Sheng Zhang has trained extensively in the USA and Europe at leading Universities pioneering techniques to rescue implants. He brings this expertise to Auckland and can give you another option for failing or sick dental implants. Modern minimally invasive surgical techniques can be used to gain additional gums and bone around a failing implant especially in its early stages.
