With the right care, dental implants can last for many years.

Modern dental implants are designed to last for many years, making them a popular choice for those looking for a permanent solution to missing teeth. While the lifespan of implants varies from person to person, most will last at least 10 years with proper care. Here’s what you need to know about dental implant longevity and how to maximise their lifespan…

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a structure that is made from biocompatible material and placed directly into the jawbone in order to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over time, the dental implant will fuse with the bone in a process known as osseointegration and then a crown is attached to the implant to complete the treatment and restore full oral function.

Dental implants are considered a permanent solution for missing teeth. They provide excellent stability and feel both comfortable and secure in one’s mouth.

How long do dental implants last?

Because dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone and fuse with the bone over time, they are considered a permanent solution to tooth loss. Once the dental implant has been surgically placed and the osseointegration process is complete, the implant will act as a solid and stable foundation for an artificial tooth.

It is important to note that while dental implants are designed to last a lifetime, the crowns that are attached are prone to wear and tear over time, and may eventually need to be replaced. However,  dental crowns are made from highly durable materials and can last for 15 years or more with the correct care and oral hygiene practices.

What impacts the lifespan of a dental implant?

Dental implants are generally a very successful and effective treatment, and in most cases, they should last for a lifetime. It is possible, however, for dental implants to fail for a few reasons.

One of the factors that can affect the lifespan and success of a dental implant is general oral hygiene. Once you have had an implant placed, it is very important that you practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis — this includes brushing and flossing, as well as regular visits to your dentist. If plaque is left to accumulate around a dental implant, an issue known as peri-implant disease can occur. This disease can cause serious damage and even lead to implant failure. For this reason, it is important that you take care of your teeth and implants, limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks, and visit your dentist every six months or so.

Other factors that can affect the success and longevity of a dental implant include insufficient jawbone; lifestyle habits like smoking; teeth grinding, which can affect the osseointegration process; and certain medical conditions and medications.
