Periodontal Regeneration
Gum disease causes the progressive loss of the tooth’s support structures such as the gums, periodontal ligament, cementum and bone. Modern gum disease treatment allows the patient to maintain their natural teeth even if it has lost considerable amounts of the support structure.
Periodontal regeneration often called Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR) is a technique that aims to restore the periodontally compromised tooth’s damaged support structures. It is characterised by formation of new cementum, new periodontal ligament and new bone around the tooth root.
The technique employs scaffolds, cells and growth factors to enhance biological activity. At Dental Artistry we use techniques in tissue engineering with Enamel Matrix Derivatives (Emdogaine®) and the bodies own stem cells to provide very predictable treatment results for our patients.
Periodontal regeneration is the only treatment available today that does not just stop the gum disease process but reverses its effects at a histological level. It is considered the gold standard of gum disease management. Dr Sheng Zhang has trained with the masters in this field in Italy and Switzerland to bring these procedures back to help our patients in New Zealand.
