Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Periodontal plastic surgery are surgical procedures performed to prevent or correct gum recession.

There are three main causes of gum recession.

1) Anatomical variation which increases the likelihood of developing gum recession. This may be tooth position within the bone, presence of delicate gums (like delicate skin) or high muscle attachment to the gums.

2) Physiologic changes such as ageing, gradual bite changes with wear and history of orthodontic treatment can also cause gum recession.

3) Disease related changes usually due to gum disease or traumatic wear of the gums such as aggressive tooth brushing is the third cause of gum recession. Other causes may include oral piercings, deep restorations, smoking and oral infections.

The key to gum recession treatment is to identify the problem as early as possible so strategies can be employed to limit the future recession. Like most things prevention is better than a cure. This can simply be habit change, improvement in cleaning techniques or addressing any gum disease in its mild form. In some cases thin delicate gums can be grafted to give a thick protective band of gums to prevent further recession.

Once gum recession has advanced many surgical techniques are available to correct the recession. At Dental Artistry Dr Sheng Zhang is one of the few clinicians in the world who can offer the complete spectrum of gum graft procedures. He is trained in traditional surgical techniques as well as tunnelling, keyhole or Pinhole surgical techniques. Gum grafting is his passion and Dr Sheng teaches these techniques extensively in New Zealand and overseas.

Each patient’s case is unique so a tailored plan will be provided to give the best outcomes.

Gum graft procedures today  are predictable with low levels of discomfort and offer stable long-term results.

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST®), also known as Pinhole Gum RejuvenationTM was invented and patented by Dr John Chao.

Dr Sheng Zhang was personally trained by Dr Chao at the Pinhole Academy in California, USA.

The Pinhole® Surgical Technique is revolutionary in that it is scalpel-free, suture-free, graft-free, minimally invasive procedure for correcting gum recession and saving teeth.

The procedure is performed by making a small hole with a needle in the gum tissue. Using specially designed instruments, the gum tissue is gently loosened and guided over the receded part of the tooth. Since there are no incisions or sutures, patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms (pain, swelling and bleeding). Most patients can resume light normal activities within 24-48 hours after treatment. The instant cosmetic improvement leaves most patients very pleasantly surprised.

If you have concerns about your receding gums, why not book a consultation with Dr Sheng to assess your suitability for The Pinhole® Surgical Technique. At the appointment Dr Sheng will assess and photograph your teeth and gums to discuss how the procedure would benefit you. You will also be shown a portfolio of his clinical cases so you can determine if this treatment is right for you.
